Program Title:
Electrical Engineering Technician program
Program Code:
0317X01FWO
The Electrical Engineering Technician program at Algonquin College is a broad-based program that prepares students to work in any area that involves electricity, including power line maintenance, as electrical designers, electricians, and automation specialists.
This two-year Diploma program prepares students for career paths in the electrical, communications, manufacturing, utilities and protection fields. The program appeals to students whose interests go beyond operation of devices and equipment in their environment and extends to the challenges of understanding and analyzing the action and interaction of internal components.
Students acquire basic fundamentals and take general education courses during the first two levels. In Levels 3 and 4, students develop the technical skills and expertise required by many of the more sophisticated areas of these industries.
The curriculum covers core courses in electrical principles, codes, circuitry, control systems, and machinery. Students also study telecommunications, electronics, instrumentation and robotics. The program includes a strong practical component. Lectures typically introduce a new area of study and are immediately followed by practical experiments to further strengthen the student's knowledge base.
Graduates may find employment in design and testing, manufacturing, installation and/or supervision, diagnostics and analysis of electrical, communication, utilities and fire protection equipment and systems.
